B&W negative development as a service has taken a real hit in service & quality the past several years. This is in fact due the much lower volumes forcing many labs to close. Also, factor in the loss of experienced individuals to process the film correctly. Another big problem are the labs that process B&W film usually use '1' factory produced developer for 'all' the films they run. While one developer might be good for one film, it might not be as optimal for another.
ABOUT:
While the film manufactures have little to say about the changes in their films and how they are made, we had a gross increase in mottling issues. This has all been on the hush-hush, so-to-speak. Nonetheless, tank processing has become an issue with some if not all films and most all developer types. This held true @ our lab as well for negatives [because of the nature of the dr5 process and the processor design, we have not seen these issues on the transparency side] and you have most likely experienced this problem elsewhere. For these quality reasons we changed our negative system to a rotary processing system. While this is a more expensive processing option, the custom versatility is endless. As well, the negative is perfect without flaws.
Our negative development is like no other lab in the country. Our processing line utilizes; the best developer for the film-type submitted. Each film type has its own processing times and procedures, making our system capable, for all B&W film types. Our procedures are proprietary, but 'you' are in total control.
